Hate Crime

For Hampshire Constabulary to be truly effective and provide an appropriate level of service to victims of hate crime / hate incidents, it is important that the community has the confidence to report hate crime. Due to the nature of hate crimes, victims often find it difficult to report it to the police and in many cases criminals take advantage of this fact thinking that it won’t be reported. Following the introduction of the Equality Act 2010 and changes regarding protecting potential vulnerable characteristics the Crime Standards Department conducted a review of our force policies and procedures relating to hate crime in order to better protect victims of hate crime / incidents.

Definition of a hate incident:

‘Any incident, which may or may not constitute a criminal offence, which is perceived by the victim or any other person, as being motivated by prejudice or hate based on age, disability, gender, homophobia, racism, religion, transphobia’.
