Members' Allowance Scheme
Each year a basic allowance is paid to each member of the Police Authority, which is made in 12 equal monthly instalments. A special responsibility allowance is paid to the Chair, Vice-Chair and Committee Chairs only. The allowances payable to members take into account the role of a member and the time commitment given to carrying out police authority business.
The Scheme was made in accordance with legislative provisions included in the Criminal Justice and Police Act 2001, which amended the Police Act 1996. The new legislative provisions came into effect on December 1, 2001.
The legislative provisions allow each police authority to decide its own allowance scheme and require police authorities to publish any revisions to their scheme before the changes can take effect. The Authority reviews its allowance scheme before April 1 each year and any amendments are approved by the Authority prior to this date.
In light of the Police Reform Act 2002, police authorities can adopt their own travel and subsistence scheme (from October 1, 2002). This allows for members to be reimbursed for necessary travelling expenses.
All members' allowances are subject to tax and national insurance deductions.
