NQT Induction

Newly Qualified Teacher Induction

Your NQT's Contract

Most NQTs are employed on permanent contracts. (In the unlikely event of failing induction, this contract would automatically end as they would not then be eligible to teach.) However, sometimes a ‘fixed-term’ contract with a specified end date is appropriate (e.g. to fulfil a temporary requirement in a school, or if the number on roll is known to be falling); or sometimes an open-ended ‘temporary’ contract will be appropriate (e.g. to cover a colleague who is sick or on maternity leave with no specified date of return). If your NQT is given a non-permanent contract, they must be fully aware of the reason and this reason must be given to EPS on registration and entered on the termly assessment forms. A fixed-term contract is inappropriate for an NQT unless it is for one of the recognised/ legitimate reasons above. Professional Associations are given regular data on this and any cases where a non-permanent contract has been issued for inappropriate reasons will be investigated.
