Induction in more than one school
Guidance for NQTs in 2 schools
- The schools agree that one school’s Headteacher or Secondary NQT Induction Manager oversees the whole programme of support, monitoring and assessment, ensuring that in its totality it meets the requirements
- In the ‘lead’ school, the NQT’s Induction Tutor is responsible for the NQT’s day to day school support programme and gathering of evidence to contribute to the assessment. The Induction Tutor in the ‘other’ school co-ordinates that school’s element of the support programme, monitoring and assessment and ensures that it complements the lead school’s programme and provides evidence for the overall assessment process
- Both schools must agree how and when the 10% release time and additional PPA time are arranged and ensure that both are pre-scheduled, protected and regular rather than ‘blocked’. This may mean that one or both schools need to increase the NQT’s contracted time to encompass non-contact time.
- The NQT himself provides a link between the two elements of his induction by ensuring that his Career Entry and Development Profile and induction records reflect both and are available for both (e.g. the Hampshire NQT Induction Log reflects discussions, action points and activities at both schools)
- The Headteacher of the ‘lead’ school makes the final recommendation to the LA based on evidence gathered from both schools
In order to ensure accurate, rigorous, fair and consistent assessment we suggest that the following mechanisms are put in place to facilitate the process:
That the ‘assessing’ school:
- agrees with the other school and the NQT how he will be given opportunities to demonstrate the whole range of the standards across the two elements of the induction
- agrees with the other school the NQT’s programme of support, to ensure that it is coherent and targeted at his needs, including attendance at school-based and LA NQT programmes where appropriate
- collates the evidence against the Induction Standards and completes the necessary assessment reports
- provides the final recommendation to the LA
That the ‘second’ school:
- ensures regular communication with the lead school on the NQT’s support, monitoring and assessment programme
- provides the lead school with regular evidence against the Induction Standards e.g. lesson observations, reports of meetings and discussions
That both:
- have regular liaison during the whole induction period to set targets and objectives and to ensure that the requirements are met and the NQT achieves a successful induction, and in particular a joint meeting prior to the completion of the second assessment report.
